Dominic Tomalin, Vice Principal
Dominic joins CATS Cambridge for September 2016. He brings a wide range of expertise across various subject areas, teaching and learning, pastoral roles and higher education.
Before joining CATS Cambridge, he was Head of Economics & Business and Head of Further Education at Culford School. In addition to these roles he also led a strategic review of teaching and learning at Culford, building on his interest in educational psychology and the implications of recent developments in neuroscience and ICT for education.
Prior to working at Culford he was at Kelly College for 7 years, where he taught Maths, Physics, Economics and Business Studies to A level and he was also a senior boys’ housemaster. Before entering teaching he held a variety of senior roles in the defence, logistics and telecommunications sectors, having previously served as an officer in the Corps of Royal Engineers, the civil engineering branch of the British Army.

What’s special about CATS is that it provides a genuine preparation for university - a real learning path towards being the type of independent learner that any university wants.
Susanna de Beer, PSHE Co-ordinator and Programme Director for Pre: Programme
I have been teaching for sixteen years, in locations as far afield as California and Cape Town, until I joined CATS Cambridge in 2009. I believe that there are keys to unlock learning for students of all abilities, and this conviction lead me to study my first degree in Education and subsequent, postgraduate degrees in Psychology and Applied Linguistics.
My other roles are to coordinate our Personal Development Programmes and oversee our Pre: Programme students while teaching English.
Some of our students arrive shy, uncertain and unaware of their own strengths. As academic and pastoral staff we confront them with new knowledge, guide and encourage them. In turn, these students engage sincerely with their subjects, become involved in college life and make good friends. Then in a relatively short space of two or three years, they mature into amazing young adults, who know exactly who they are and what they want from life - their futures opening up before them.
I make sure our students have a "soft landing" settle well into their new surroundings, meet new friends and make a great start before the hard graft of the academic year begins.
Rob Mathers, MMath (Hons) PGCE, Maths Tutor
I studied a Mathematics Master's Degree at Durham University, specialising in Pure Mathematics. In my fourth year of study I worked in a group designing and analysing the Mathematics of different bubbles and how this could be used in other topics. After graduating I taught in three schools in the South West of England, before joining CATS Cambridge.
As well as being a Maths Tutor and a PT at CATS, I also work with the student council, helping to make the changes that students want to see happen in the College. Outside of college I captain one of the University of Cambridge college's MCR football teams, and I also play guitar in a band who gig in Cambridge.
I love working with students from all over the world and finding out which different parts of Maths they've studied and enjoyed.
