The first Bloomberg Business Lab at a school in Europe unveiled

University preparation 25 January 2019

CATS London, an international boarding school for students aged 15-18, today officially unveiled its £200,000 Bloomberg Business Lab – the first school in Europe to have such a facility, at an event welcoming agent partners, staff and students.

The Lab, designed by interiors agency Mystery, was inspired by the award-winning Bloomberg European HQ, which was named UK’s best new building in October 2018.

The Lab comprises 14 Bloomberg Business Terminals clustered on workspaces to encourage collaboration, feature lighting and flooring, city of London framed prints and time zone clocks.

Talking about the Lab, Mario Di Clemente, CATS London Principal says:

“The Bloomberg Business Lab at CATS London marks a significant investment into facilities for our students. We have seen a rise in students choosing a variety of business-related degrees at leading UK universities. Last year, nearly 50% of our students went on to study subjects in this area including a student from South Korea who progressed to the University of Cambridge to study Economics.”

All students at the College have access to the Lab; they can join the Bloomberg Market Concepts Club to learn how to use a Bloomberg Terminal and take an eight-hour self-paced e-learning module to get Bloomberg certified.

In addition, students choosing the subjects of Business, Accounting or Economics take classes in the Lab.

Aisha Asad, CATS Bloomberg Business Lab coordinator and teacher of Economics and Business says:

“To ensure the students develop real-life practical skills for university and the world of work, we have developed a business curriculum exposing learners to different aspects of the Terminal to help them conduct research, analyse financial markets, assess economic scenarios and interpret the key news developments that impact the global economy.

As part of the Lab unveiling, agent partners and students competed in a CATS London Business Challenge. Students turned teachers as they helped delegates use a Bloomberg Terminal to find and match some of its many functions.

Special thanks to our guest speaker, Sunit Modhvadia from Bloomberg who helped us celebrate the launch of CATS London Bloomberg Business Lab.

Talking about the role Bloomberg plays in preparing students for a career in business, Sunit explained that some large employers are now making it mandatory for those joining at graduate level to have completed Bloomberg Market Concepts, a certificated interactive introduction to the financial markets. This eight hour e-learn is offered to all CATS London students.
