35 years of the CATS University Foundation Programme

Course guideUniversity preparation 30 January 2020

2020 marks the 35th anniversary of the CATS University Foundation Programme (UFP), a course designed for international students, which acts as a bridge from your high school education in your own country to university in the UK.

Preparing you for university

Launched in 1985, the CATS Foundation is unlike many others. It is a completely independent subject-focused qualification and accepted by 99% of UK universities. This means on successful completion of the course you have access to studying 98% of degree programmes in the UK in a wide variety of subjects such as Business, Law, and healthcare. The programme is designed in conjunction with academics from top universities including Loughborough, Exeter and Bristol to ensure that it meets the expectations of top universities.

CATS Colleges is proud to have taught over 5000 international students from 100 nationalities on the programme and since 2012, CATS students have progressed to 72 of the top 100 UK universities including 15 of the top 20*.

A CATS Foundation alumni from China who progressed to study Law at University of Warwick commented:

“I had a great time at CATS and when I came to university, I realised how the environment encouraged us to make friends and communicate with other people. Unlike teachers in most Asian countries, teachers at CATS interacted with us in class, it was never simply about the academic facts but also how the course can benefit our future study.”

A qualification for the 21st century

You can achieve a level 3 qualification in one year (two or three terms) which is a faster route compared to more traditional qualifications such as A level. You will also develop academic skills by presenting research findings in formats expected at university. You can choose from 18 subjects to customise your programme, as well as developing your English language skills to ensure you reach the desired level for university entry.

A current UFP student from South Korea, currently holding an offer to study Chemistry at Durham, commented:

“I got a lot of useful advice from CATS and I think this helped me to achieve a good offer. I have a conditional offer to Durham and with support from my teachers I am confident I will get the results I need.”

Guaranteed Progression

You can also benefit from guaranteed progression from the University Foundation Programme to our partner universities who have been selected to provide a range of degree programmes from Business and Law to healthcare-related degrees such as Pharmacy, Biomedicine and Physiotherapy. Outside a range of conditional offers, every CATS student will continue to receive one-to-one independent advice and guidance from dedicated CATS Higher Education Officers who have over 60 years’ experience between them counselling students on choosing a university and degree programme.
